“Books are the ultimate source of knowledge,” said former president of Asom Sahitya Sabha‘s Darrang unit Mahendra Deka.

Since the inception of the printing press, books have not only helped in the dissemination of knowledge but also bringing in revolution,” he added.

He was addressing a gathering after releasing two books- Aparajeya and Parshu Ram Baruah Debar Jiban Alekhya– written by retired teacher, author, historian Parshu Ram Baruah of Udalguri district.

Baruah released the books on the occasion of his 85th birthday celebrations, celebrated in a humble way at his residence in Bhuyakhat village.

Speaking further Deka said, “Books can never be replaced by mobile phones and social media as people still rely on books for authentic information.”

“Writers are the saints of society. This is evident by the writings of Rousseau and Voltaire, which ignited the French revolution,” added.

Lauding Parshu Ram Baruah’s efforts for authoring 32 books, he said, “History of hamlets, towns never finds a place in writings of metropolitan authors.”

“But people like Baruah have been instrumental in chronicling the history of undivided Darrang district, which will go on to add several unknown facts regarding Assam’s history,” Deka added.
