The maiden Kokrajhar Women’s Football League concluded on Sunday following a thrilling final played between Kokrajhar Crushers and Jharbari Jaguars in which Kokrajhar Crushers emerged champion.
The week-long Kokrajhar Women’s Football League was able to draw a large number of football-crazy people.
The tournament, a first of its kind for women of the region, was organised by Red Horns Division of the Indian Army as part of the Sadbhavna initiative.
The tournament, held over eight days at Senior Secondary ground, Kokrajhar, witnessed eight teams from Kokrajhar, Gossaigaon and Parbatjhora Sub-divisions of Kokrajhar district putting up spirited performances for the trophy and to be crowned the first champions of the Women’s Football League.
In an exciting final held on Sunday, Kokrajhar Crushers beat Jharbhari Jaguars by 3-1 goals.
The final match was witnessed by a jam-packed arena in presence of prominent dignitaries including Brigadier Gagan Deep, Commander Agia Brigade, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Niranjan Baruah and Kokrajhar West MLA Ravi Ram Narzary.
The post match presentation ceremony saw presentation of the trophy, medals and certificates to the winners and participating teams.
In collaboration with the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the winning team was awarded a cheque for Rs 50,000.
While the runners-up team was presented a cheque for Rs 25,000, all the participating teams were handed over a cheque for Rs 5,000.
The Best Player’s trophy was awarded to Dwithi Boro of Kokrajhar Crushers.
The tournament has contributed towards encouraging girls to pick up sports, promoting physical fitness and developing a competitive spirit.
It is expected that the tournament would provide much-needed impetus to women’s football and motivate more women to the join the field of sport.
The event is planned to be held annually.
