The eight-member special review committee to review of conditions of detainees in various detention centres of Assam for illegal immigrants visited Kokrajhar on Tuesday to review the living conditions of the detention centre.

The Committee headed by DIG (border) D Mukharjee, inspector general of prisons B Sarma, district and session’s judge (retd) Hardeep Singh and AIG of prisons D Saikia visited the detention camp inside Kokrajhar jail which houses women detainees and their children.

Talking to reporters, DIG (border) D Mukharjee who is the chairman of the committee said the committee is visiting the detention centres in the State to review the living conditions in the detention centres.

He also said the committee would provide recommendation for improvement if needed and also review the quality of food, hygiene and also review the legal aid status, health status of detainees.

The committee will also check the education system for the children staying in the centres and provide suggestion.

He said the committee after visiting all the six detention centres will submit the consolidated   report within three months.

Around 1000 detainees are housed in the six detention centres located inside jails across Assam.
