In yet another incident of man-elephant conflict in Goalpara district of lower Assam early on Tuesday morning, a senior citizen was thrashed and killed by a wild tusker.

The man, Tiken Chandra Nath came out of his Monakosa Bakaitary village residence under Matia revenue circle with his 15 months old grand-daughter with a view to morning walk.

He was only a few yards from his residence that the elephant appeared from nowhere and attacked him from the backside.

In the attack, Nath fell down on the road when his grand-daughter also slipped from his arms.

Surprisingly, the pachyderm, after mowing down Nath, left alone his grand-daughter who remained unscratched.

As the matter caught notice by a few morning walkers and a hue and cry was made, the elephant immediately left the village and took shelter in nearby jungle of West Matia.

“I didn’t know about the incident. However, waking up to the terrified noises by the people, I came out and found my father lying on road,” reacted Pranab Nath, son of the deceased.

Meanwhile, Local police arrived at the scene and took the body for postmortem and other government procedures. However, at the time of filling this report, the forest department officials were not present.

“This is the sixth death caused by wild elephants in and around greater Matia area in last few years. A woman was killed three months back at Santipur Matia which was the last elephant attack,” informed Kandarpa Nath, a local youth.

The locals have demanded a practical and long term solution for this long standing problem.
