A three-day ‘National Workshop on Landslide Hazard in Southern Mizoram’ began in Mizoram on Thursday.
The workshop is being held at the Lunglei Government College Multipurpose Hall.
It was inaugurated by Dr Vanlaltanpuia, MLA & chairman of Mizoram Youth Commission (MYC).
The workshop focuses on frequent occurrence of landslides and related disasters in Mizoram, especially during the monsoon season.
The event is being organized by Mizoram Remote Sensing Application Centre (MIRSAC), Directorate of Geology & Mineral Resources, Lunglei Government College and Geological Society of Mizoram.
Resource persons drawn in from top institutes in the State will cover wide ranging topic such as ‘Landslide inventory collection and its significance’, ‘Landslide Hazard, Vulnerability, and Risk Assessment of Lunglei Town’, ‘Landslide investigation of Lunglei College Veng: A Case Study’.
Participants will also visit recent landslide sites within and around the town on the final day of the workshop.
Having recently experienced serious landslide incidents which led to loss of human lives and infrastructure damage and loss, the workshop is a welcome event for Lunglei Town, to understand existing risks and learn various prevention and mitigation strategies.
