Six-time world champion M.C. Mary Kom (51 kg) cruised into the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Boxing Championship at Ulan-Ude in Russia.
The 36-year-old boxer from Manipur advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating her opponent from Thailand, Jutamas Jitpong 5-0.
Informing about Mary Kom’s win on its official Twitter handle, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) said: “Anddd Mary takes it home!
“@MangteC (Mary Kom) outpunches her Thai opponent Jutmas Jitpong with a 5-0 verdict to cruise into the quarter-finals of the #AIBAWorldBoxingChampionship,” it added.

Union minister of state (independent charge) for sports and youth affairs Kiren Rijiju, while sharing a video on Mary Kom winning the match and her joy after the win, said: “Well begun Mary Kom!”

According to match reports, the third-seeded Indian, who got a bye in the opening round, spent the first three minutes getting a good measure of her opponent before taking control of the proceedings.

Mary Kom, chasing her first world medal in the 51 kg division at Ulan Ude, picked up pace in the second round of the game and was sharp with her counter-attacks.
She is the only woman to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven world championships.
