Professor Malinee Goswami on Monday assumed charge as the first Vice Chancellor of the six-year-old Assam Women’s University (AWU) near Rowriah in Jorhat.
Prof Goswami was the head of the department of Assamese in Gauhati University.
Prof Goswami was appointed as the VC of AWU by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who is the Chancellor of the university.

She was appointed on September 12 by a government notification issued by the secretary of Higher Education (Technical) department, Assam.
In her maiden speech at the University on Monday, Goswami said, “I have been entrusted with a lot of responsibilities.”
She hoped to do justice to the task in taking the university forward.
Praising the mentor and officials, who were temporarily appointed, she said they had nurtured this institution with great care and now it is for her to carry forward their work to the best of her ability.
Prof Goswami further said she has had vast experience in Gauhati University and is confident of shouldering this responsibility.
She was greeted with a performance by Gayan Bayan and felicitated with a traditional gamocha.
