Tripura Police have arrested a person for trafficking stray dogs to Mizoram.
“Acting on a tip-off, police searched a vehicle on Thursday night at Santipur check post and found five grownup dogs tied inside jute sacks. Police after questing, arrested the driver of the vehicle, who planned to transport the dogs to Mizoram,” a police official told reporters on Friday.
The arrested dog trafficker has been identified as Jarendra Reang, 23, a resident of Mungiyakami under Teliamura police station in Khowai district.
The officer in-charge of the Kanchanpur police station, Paritosh Das said the vehicle was coming from Mungiyakami and was on the way to Mizoram via Kanchanpur in North Tripura.
In a separate incident, a local NGO has lodged a complaint with NCC police station against a person for his alleged involvement in dog killing and trafficking.
Hrikbed Datta, the president of Pawsome, a local NGO, said they have filed complaint against Biswajit Debbarma for killing a dog.
According to the dog lifters, each grownup dog fetches between Rs.2, 000 and Rs.2, 500 in Mizoram and Nagaland as dog’s meat is a favourite food there.
