Twenty organizations of various kinds of Lakhimpur in Assam have announced their opposition to the resumption of construction work of Lower Subansiri Hydro Electrical Plant by National Hydro-electrical Power Corporation in Gerukamukh.

This was decided following a public meeting held at Hotel Orbit in North Lakhimpur on Sunday.

The meeting was convened by Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parichad, Lakhimpur District Committee and was chaired by noted conservation activist Kesab Krishna Chatradhora.

The objective of the meeting was explained by Sudipta Hazarika, secretary of AJYP-Lakhimpur unit.

Speaking at the meeting, Azad Hazarika, advisor of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti called for a united stand against the dam over Subanriri river by NHPC and said that the recent verdict by National Green Tribunal won’t be accepted at any cost.

Scribe Sailen Baruah in his address to the meeting mentioned the flaws and loopholes in the verdict of NGT and stressed the need for separate hearings for Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts over the issue.

The chairman of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti-Lakhimpurunit Raju Singha asked the government to make alternative arrangements for the LSHEP dam while opposing to the construction work at Gerukamukh.

The meeting was also attended by representatives from AAMSU, ATASU, AKRASU, AASCSU, Asom Yuva Mancha, ex-ULFA Union, TAYPA and many more.

All the 20 organizations gathered at the meeting pledged to start a stir against LSHEP jointly from August 24 next.
