The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for the first time formed Zila Parishad of Hojai.
Ramabala Devi, who won the Zila Parishad seat from of Rajbari, has been appointed as the new president of Hojai Zila Parishad.
Nur Ahmed, who won the Zila Parishad seat from Daboka, has been appointed as the vice-president of Hojai Zila Parishad.
The coalition Zila Parishad of Hojai, formed by the members of Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), formally was dissolved on July 26.
On July 3 last, six members of the BJP submitted a letter to the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Pankaj Deka to move a ‘no confidence motion’ against the Zila Parishad of the Congress-AIUDF coalition led by first woman president, Razia Sultana.
After the ‘no confidence motion’ moved on July 26 in the presence of Hojai deputy commissioner Tanmoy Pratim Borgohain.
The voting took place at Sankardev Nagar in the district headquarters of Hojai and finally the Hojai Zila Parishad of Congress-AIUDF coalition was dissolved.
In the last Panchayat polls, out of the 12 Zila Parishad seats, the BJP had won 5 seats, Congress won 6 seats and the AIUDF won 1 seat.
The Congress formed the Zila Parishad with the help of AIUDF.
Few months back, one Congress member of the Zila Parishad from Kaki joined the BJP following which the number of BJP members increased to 6 and the number of Congress members came down to 5.
According to information, on July 26, two members of the Congress also voted in favour of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
The BJP with support of 8 members including 2 Congress members finally formed the Zila Parishad.
The two Zila Parishad members of the Congress –Nur Ahmed from Daboka and Nawaz Uddin from Nilbagan – supported the BJP to form the Zila Parishad for the first time.
The BJP supporters celebrated the win with crackers, smearing colours and sharing sweets.
Talking to Northeast Now, Hojai district BJP president Arjun Mazumdar expressed his happiness over formation of the Zila Parishad by the party.
Mazumdar said, “During the six-month tenure of the Congress-AIUDF coalition Zila Parishad, there was no development. They were involved in their own works.”
“But in the rest four-and-half-years from now on, we hope there will be massive development in Hojai under the BJP-led Zila Parishad,” he added.
Talking to Northeast Now, Bijoy Chakraborty, general secretary, Hojai District Congress, said, “The BJP has no accurate policy and willpower for development. They only know the language of defection politics.”
Helaludin Ahmed, the Hojai district president of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), said, “BJP is hungry for power and so they lured two Congress members towards their side.”
“In the last six months, during the Congress-AIUDF coalition rule, the BJP did not co-operate with us whereas we assure them full co-operation from our side,” added Ahmed.
