Aizawl: Opposition corporators of Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday slammed the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and said that it has no longer faith in the rule of MNF.

AMC is currently dominated and governed by the MNF.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Aizawl, opposition corporators from the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Congress alleged that the MNF-led AMC showed nepotism and undue favour to party workers.

They said that the AMC awarded minor contract works worth over Rs. 30.92 crore to MNF party workers during four years between 2021 and 2024.

They also questioned the whereabouts of Rs. 1.95 crore collected as property tax.

The opposition corporators said that the property tax is mainly divided into three components — five per cent for local councils, 15 per for office administration and 80 for the development of localities in different wards.

While 80 per cent of the property tax return was equally divided among different wards of AMC, it has never been done so in the current term, they said.

They said that utilisation of Rs. 1.95 crore of property tax is not known.

The opposition corporators further alleged that the state government sanctioned Rs. 2.74 crore for the purchase of an incinerator to be installed at a solid waste management centre at Tuirial near Aizawl.

The incinerator was bought from Hyderabad and it has been non-functional properly since its installation at the waste management centre, they said.

They also blamed the present AMC for delaying office work in issuing house construction permits, shop licenses and other important works dealt with by the AMC.
